Hi – welcome to our website! Thank you for your interest. This site records the blogs and photos from our two month trip around Australia on dirt bikes in 2008 – unsupported – almost exclusively on dirt roads and 4WD tracks. The trip took 8 weeks and covered 18,000 Kms. There were 3 riders – Dad (Alan) and two sons (Jonny and Ben) and our lack of support meant we had to carry everything ourselves. Our Donations Page is no longer active, but please feel free to donate to the National Breast Cancer Foundation directly at any time – they do great work for an important cause. The Flickr photos pages are still active and can be viewed by clicking on the link “more photos” on the right hand side and then scroll down and click “next page”. If you are planning a trip and have any questions, please post a Comment at the bottom of this page. This is what we wrote as we went along:
For two months, we will be carrying tools, spares, communications equipment, safety equipment, camping gear, food, fuel and water on the bikes and on our backs. We leave from Sydney and travel across the Simpson Desert to Uluru, then up to Darwin, across the Kimberley region and the Pilbara, down to Perth. We return to Sydney across the Nullarbor and the Flinders Ranges, all the way travelling mostly on dirt roads and 4WD tracks.
We call it the Hard Way Round.
Australia is truly one of the most incredibly diverse places in the world. Join us on our travels around the largest island in the world. Live vicariously through us as we live many mens’ dreams and help those in need at the same time. Make our trip more purposeful by making a donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, at http://www.everydayhero.com.au/thehardwayround. Alan’s sister and uncle died from cancer, and his mother died from breast cancer at an early age. Helping to fund the NBCF will make our trip even more enjoyable. We pay a big shout-out to our corporate sponsors (see the Sponsors blog – go on!) for their awesome generosity and support. This trip is fully self-funded, so every dollar that you donate goes straight to the NBCF.
We look forward to sharing our stories with you!
For media enquiries, corporate donations or any other enquiries, please contact:
Alan, Ben and Jonny on 0411 226 094, or wahlhaus@bigpond.net.au

G’day blokes,
Allen, I spoke with you brieffley at breakfast in Cobar on Tuesday June 24th.
I hope all is well with you, the boys & the machines.
Can’t tell you how envious I am as a fellow motorcyclist presently without the time to complete such an adventure. One day to I might drag out the Beemer, dust off the leathers & just do it.
Meanwhile, Good luck & go safely.

Hi Allan and the Bikie Sons
We back in Sydney Town.We had a fantastic trip in the outback and our stay in the Kintore Aborigine community(50kms from Western Australian border) was an eye opener to say the least. The other highlight of the trip was the 3hour walk in Kings Canyon and of course meeting up with you all in Uluru !!How was that for timing .It could not have been better planned!!Margot and I can vouch that you boys were in excellent shape
and marvelled about your experience through the Simpson Desert. We might still join up with you one day. You on 2 and we on 4 wheels!
Take care.Enjoy!!

Alan, Ben and Jon, I am glad to hear that there were lots of questions about your nutritional intake – not that excess body mass has ever been an issue with you three, but in the photos you are all looking exceptionally lean and fit. Maybe you should consider parlaying tuna and crackers and carrying around 250kg dirt bikes into two week weight loss and fitness excursions –you could call it Hit the Wahl Dirt Bike Boot Camp! I promise you’d have people signing up from my end of the world!

Hey guys, I was just reading your website. Indeed Charley is in Australia. We saw him and his crew at a cafe in Copley SA, (which is outside Leigh Creek SA, which is about 2.5 hours north of Port Augusta).
They were pretty low key, they enjoyed our dog. Probably glad we didn’t bother them during their lunch.
Enjoy the rest of your ride.

Happy birthday, Alan. Hope I’m not too late even though you birthday was on the 15th July. Was going to send a card but realised that it would take 6 days to get there – so saved money on the card and emailed instead. We came round with an expensive present for you but you weren’t there. Will keep it for next year.
Did you know the Tour de France is on? They don’t have any engines, Alan and we don’t hear any complaints from them about sinking in rivers and getting bogged down in the sand.
Thanks for all the postcards that never arrived. Please bring souveniers from every port of call. Love Maxine and Mervyn

Hi Guys,
We’re just back from a trip up north to beautiful Yosemite and Sacramento. Must admit that compared to stories of staightening handlebars on trees and picking up tree limbs through boots; driving in a car and staying in hotels made me feel like a bit of a wuss.
Also, Ronni and Shanna met up today! Shanna comes home tomorrow night – can’t wait.

Did you get our comments? It took us about 6 months to work out how to comment. Please let us know.
There’s not much news other than Brakkie got shaved. It’s the coldest winter that has ever been recorded and Brakkie got shaved. She does not look like a dog now but like shawn rat. We have changed her name to Sean. Do you like it? Sharon bought Brakkie a coat. It’s denim with a fur collar. Very in. It keeps slipping – it keeps her head warm and not much else. Brakkie is freezing. Love Maxine

Am also a bit sad you are heading East. I have loved following the blogs, seeing the photos and reading the posts (special thanks to Ceen).
When you started this extraordinary adventure I think no one had any idea of how many people you would impact and inspire. And how many people would make a difference in your lives (specifically the Simpson Desert heroes – without whom you would have been home six weeks ago…) And a huge salute to Sharon – whose middle name at the best of times is ‘Insomnia’, I can’t even imagine what these past weeks have been like for you.
We are so proud of you all!

So you’re on the home stretch….. what will us armchair adventure addicts do once your journey is completed? You’ll have to plan another one – I hear New Zealand is nice. Only kidding Sharon – can’t wait to see & hear you boys in good old DH.
Love always the Kugels.

Hi Guys
We saw your bike when we too were doing the Dale Gorge walk. I wrote down the website and it’s taken me this long to look it up. What an adventure you are having. We are one of those couple with a 4WD and caravan – doing it in comfort compared to you and I’m glad!It was freezing that night in Karijini and we were glad to be snuggled up inside our van!
All the best for your travels.
cheers from the Weggs
